(WICHITA, KS) – Chris Presson, General Manager of the INTRUST Bank Arena, proudly announced the grand opening activities scheduled for January as the community celebrates the long-awaited opening of Wichita’s premier entertainment venue.

“We are truly excited to unveil the facility to the community, and we’ve created activities that we believe everyone will enjoy. It is our hope that thousands of people will join us for the ribbon cutting and public open house on January 2, celebrating this exciting showcase of the building and our staff. The opening marks an important moment for all of us and there’s much to celebrate!”

Ribbon cutting coloring contest: In advance of the ribbon cutting ceremony on January 2, children ages 6-12 are asked to submit drawings on 8.5” x 11” paper of “What I’d like to see or do” at the INTRUST Bank Arena. Presson commented, “We wanted to celebrate the public ownership of the Arena by having someone from the community enjoy the honor of cutting the ribbon. We hope children will have fun engaging in this coloring contest and that it will be a special moment of pride for the winner.”

One lucky winner will be chosen at random to cut the ribbon on January 2 and along with that honor will also win a special family tour that day along with four tickets to see the Harlem Globetrotters. Drawings may be dropped off at the Arena administration offices (entrance on the west side) or mailed (500 E. Waterman, Wichita, KS 67202) so they are received no later than December 18. The lucky winner will be chosen on December 21 – children need to make sure they have their parents’ permission to provide their names and telephone numbers so the winner can be reached. The contest is sponsored by The Wichita Eagle.

Saturday, January 2: Ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. followed by a public open house until 5 p.m.

This free event is the public’s first opportunity to tour the Arena from the seating bowl to dressing and locker rooms to premium seating and club and concession areas. We will be featuring selected concessions for $1.00 in order for the community to sample our culinary flair while being able to afford this fun day at the facility.

The event will begin with the official ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. which will be held inside the facility due to the potential for inclement weather, and the public is invited to tour the facility while enjoying the open house activities thereafter. The floor will be set for people of all ages to play and showcase their “Guitar Hero” skills and to shoot hoops in a basketball area.

Win the KWCH Golden Ticket! People who attend the open house are encouraged to register to win the ‘GOLDEN TICKET,’ receiving two tickets to every 2010 Arena event! “This is another way for us to engage the community in our grand opening activities,” said Presson. “Winning the ‘GOLDEN TICKET’ is an exciting prospect – who wouldn’t want the chance to see the amazing shows we’ve already announced as well as those yet to be announced?” The winner will be chosen at random at the conclusion of the open house and need not be present at the time of selection to win but will be notified thereafter.

Help the needy! SMG is a committed corporate citizen and as part of our grand opening, we wanted to offer the community an opportunity to share our commitment to be involved and engaged. Because of that, we’re asking people who attend the open house to help the Kansas Food Bank “restock after the holidays” by bringing non-perishable food items to the open house. Volunteers from Boy Scout Troop 533, Quivira Council, will be onsite at the Arena entrances to assist with gathering the items.

Tuesday, January 12: ROK ICT music night from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

This free event coordinated by ROK ICT will feature three local bands on the Arena main stage throughout the evening along with local musicians along the concourse to complement continuing facility tours.

Tuesday, January 26: Meet & Skate with the Thunder hockey team, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Providing a fun opportunity for everyone to meet and skate with members of the Wichita Thunder, the public is invited to this free event where we will have a free supply of skates for those who cannot bring their own!

In addition to the public grand opening activities, the Arena will host the media on site in late December in order to provide tours, operational tests and information on press policies, and various other private events will be hosted in January for the Arena’s major sponsors, elected officials and volunteer stakeholders who assisted with Arena oversight and design.
